Latvia has some great seaside towns and some great beaches. You may not have thought of Latvia as a holiday destination but it has a lot to offer. It is on the Baltic Sea and the weather is usually very hot in the summer although you do get the occasional shower of rain. The strange thing is that the sea is not that warm but once you get used to it, it is fine.
Jurmula is the most popular seaside town in Latvia and it has a lot going on in the summer season there. The beach at Jurmula is really nice and it has beautiful, fine white sand. It is very gently sloping and you have to go out about a hundred metres until you are up to your neck in the water. This does give you a chance to get used to the temperature of the sea, however.
The beach is also very wide and it is very well maintained. At the edge there are sand dunes with pine trees growing in them. In the town there are plenty of eating and drinking establishments and it really is a nice town to walk around in the evening. A short ride by train will take you from Jurmula to the capital of Latvia, Riga.
It is, in fact, a very nice train journey and the countryside is quite beautiful to look at. So, too, is Riga. The architecture here is quite spectacular and you can easily see the German influence here, especially in the Old City which is the central part. There is plenty to do and see in Riga and again there are many restaurants and bars. Latvian food is nice so be sure to try some of the local dishes while you are here.
