Playa de Las Canteras food options

Fishing and seafood cuisine are an authentic touch of the beach.  On the many terraces and restaurants on your walk, you can taste the delights of the place such as cuttlefish and stew canary.  All dishes are made with fresh seafood that fishermen go out to look for at the remaining areas of La Puntilla and La Isleta.

In times past, there was abundant fish but the money paid for the catch was small and working conditions required a great sacrifice. Today, motors and gears allow the practice of the profession to be more bearable, but now the fishing is so low that not enough live. This is perhaps the last generation of fishermen of Las Canteras.

Around the 50s, at the other end of the beach, where today stands the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, are located some of the most important fish factories in the Canaries, where the canning and salting of tuna and sardines were its main manufacturing.

The rise of the canning industry was such that all tuna captured is fished in the waters of the arcipelago and part of the Canary-Saharan fishing bank. When, years later, the cold would come to revolutionize the food preservation, canning Canaries were forced to disappear. From the beach you can see on days with clear skies, the entire summit of the island of Gran Canaria and part of the neighboring island of Tenerife, where you can clearly distinguish the silhouette of the Pico Teide.

Annually, coinciding with the festive season, they place a giant Christmas tree and draw up a nativity scene made entirely with allegorical sand and water.  In 2006, a group of seven of the leading arenas in the world, gathered in Las Canteras to lift the largest sand nativity in Spain, which used 250 tons of sand to cover an area of 700 square meters.La Pena de la Vieja got its curious name from the old fish (Sparisoma Cretan), a common species in the Canary Islands.  The Quarry was the site of cinematography. At La Puntilla they filmed in the mid 50’s some scenes from the movie Moby Dick in which John Huston acted and Gregory Peck had the role of Captain Ahab.

Many whales and dolphins live in the sea around the peninsula of La Isleta and sometimes came to die on the beach.  The name of Las Canteras came from when the bar was used as a stone quarry that built part of the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Vegueta.

The beach of Las Canteras is known to surfers for having two of the best waves in Europe, the wave of Lloret and El Confital, where tests are held valid for the professional world surfing championship.

Its promenade is the meeting point par excellence of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which also brings together foreign citizens who visit the city throughout the year, all of which form a rich mix of cultures in which noone loses their identity.  According to a study conducted for the magazine Scientific World, Las Canteras is one of the best urban beaches in the world.

The beach of Las Canteras aimed to become the first beach in Europe to be included in the European Network of natural spaces, according to a proposal of the VIII International Congress and Exhibition Beaches – Ecoplaya, held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2006.

It is traditional on the Nights of St. John, the feast which is celebrated on the nights of 23rd to the 24th June, to receive the arrival of summer, many islanders and visitors are given appointment in the Paseo de Las Canteras to watch the fireworks and to have a night swim in the waters of the beach, gathering sometimes in their thousands in what has become known as a very popular festival in the city.
