When the Hipodromo in Mijas first opened its gates in 2000, it was an immediate winner. Locals and tourists have been enjoying the splendid racetrack with its ideal climate and location for the past ten years, and it has become one of the biggest attractions on the Costa del Sol.
Now it’s also the place to be on a Saturday night, with races currently scheduled to take place throughout the summer.
No one could ask for a more spectacular venue, with sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of Mijas as a backdrop. The Hipodromo encompasses about 400,000 square metres and has two concentric oval racetracks, grandstand seating for 5,000 and another 5,000 seats at track level.
The facilities for horses are extensive; there are 322 fully equipped box stalls that are available for winter stabling as well as during race meetings. During the summer, racing on floodlit tracks starts in the cool of the evening at 8:30 pm., but the grounds are open all day, with show jumping, dressage and beginner riding lessons, including classes for children with special needs.
The grounds also offer spacious accommodations for live concerts and other events. You can catch a live show between races on race days, visit the art gallery or take in some of the other exhibitions. A variety of restaurants, pubs and bars offer something for every taste, so bring the family and enjoy a day and a night at the track.
