The many sports achievements that Australians have accomplished are highlighted at the Australian Institute of Sport. You can also learn a bit about its political history at the Museum of Australian Democracy. The War Memorial at the Parliament House will show how it has fared in wars it has participated in even though it is still a young nation.
Just on the outskirts of the city you can see the natural beauty that Canberra has. There are beautiful parks and gardens that you can walk through and see many indigenous plants. Canberra has many attractions as well for the family. Many have free entry and the entrance fees are quite minimal.
