Banff, Canada, a destination for families

Banff, Canada is definitely a holiday destination well suited to families. It has a great deal to offer activities wise, but is also the ideal place for parents to get some well-deserved time off. Banff is located in a World Heritage Site and this means that visitors will be surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. Banff is the perfect place to get away from all the electronics that dominate our lives, such as mobile phone and the television.

In July, the height of summer in Banff, the temperature is a mild 20 to 22 degrees Celsius with low humidity. There are very long days and it remains light late into the evenings. The weather can be enjoyed in some of Banff’s great parks, where there are wide green spaces perfect for sports and also children’s playgrounds in the town. There is a skate park and Central Park offers a fantastic climbing wall.

For more serious players of sports there are many tennis courts in the town and tennis lessons can be taken at Banff Springs Hotel. One of the greatest things about playing tennis in Banff is the beautiful surroundings, so beautiful in fact that it can be distracting.

Located about a 15 minutes drive away from the town is Cascade Ponds, an artificial lake that has a great sandy beach. Around the Ponds are some fantastic hiking trails in some of the most scenic countryside near Banff. Pack a picnic or some barbecue foods as there are plenty of picnic tables and even places to cook. Spending a whole day out near Cascade Ponds is a day well spent.

Visitors may want to take the 90 minute cruise around Lake Minnewanka. The area has a lot of history and the cruise provides some fascinating details about the surroundings. Devils Gap is the highlight of the cruise – an impressive glacial path running through the lake from the base of the Rocky Mountains.

There are so many things to do in Banff a visitor will never be bored, horseback riding, canoeing and wildlife spotting are all relaxing activities. For the more adventurous, mountain biking, kayaking and even white-water rafting are available. To experience the beauty of this spectacular part of Canada it may be a great idea to book a plane or helicopter ride through the surrounding mountains, this will be a truly unforgettable experience.
